CENTRAL BEDFORDSHIRE SPECIFIC INFORMATION

Sight and Hearing Loss (Central Bedfordshire Council)

1. Criteria

The Sensory Impairment Team provides a specialist service for people of all ages who have sight and/or hearing loss and covers both Bedford Borough and Central Bedfordshire.

If you experience sensory loss which cannot be treated by medical intervention, glasses, or hearing aids, you can request an assessment under the Care Act 2014.

2. Purpose

To provide a prompt, easily accessible specialist service to support people with their sensory loss.

3. Procedures

Once a referral is received, the person will be contacted by a duty worker to discuss their current situation to establish what support can be offered immediately (for example, they may only require advice and information at this time).

If a more detailed assessment is required the person will be allocated to a specialist worker for an assessment, usually in their own home.

Following the assessment, the person may be offered any of the following:

  • specialist hearing or visual equipment;
  • deaf and hard of hearing awareness;
  • rehabilitation training and coping strategies;
  • direct payments;
  • information for families and carers;
  • guidance on appropriate benefits;
  • advice and information on local and national services;
  • signposting to other relevant services.

4. Outcomes

  • Maintain and increase independence;
  • Maintain and improve quality of life;
  • Increase choice and control of daily life;
  • Access to other support services.
