1. Introduction
The Adult Community Occupational Therapy (OT) Service is responsible for carrying out Occupational Therapy assessments for residents of Central Bedfordshire, and where appropriate, their carer/s, to support people to remain in their own home. This is done by completing a proportionate assessment of needs in line with the Care Act 2014 and The Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996 working with people in need.
2. Aims of the Service
The aims of the service are to:
- maintain or increase levels of independence and the ability to carry out daily living tasks;
- to provide appropriate intervention that maintains the safety and wellbeing of a person and their carer/s.
This is usually following illness or injury, or due to the effects of ageing or long-term physical conditions.
In the assessment we gather information about the Person who has been referred, their carer/s, family and relevant other people. Following the assessment, and where eligible, we may provide or recommend things relevant to their circumstances, identified needs and desired outcomes, to promote and maximise their independence. Examples are:
- give information, advice, and guidance to people;
- low level and preventative services, where appropriate;
- refer on to other services;
- equipment and / or minor adaptations;
- major adaptations (see housing policy re-funding options Housing Services Policy and Guidance).
The team work closely with health professionals, social care colleagues and housing teams to facilitate appropriate works and provide advice to promote and / or enable independence, quality of life and safety within the home.
In addition to the assessment team, there are OT’s working with CBC Housing and Registered Social Landlords to identify suitable properties for people with disabilities where their current properties are unable to be adapted.
